Why Choose Instant Physio Balham?

Choosing the right physiotherapy clinic matters. We focus on clinical quality, communication and long-term results.

Highly Trained Clinicians

Less than 0.5% of applicants are selected to join our team. Our clinicians are Chartered Physiotherapists with advanced training in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and hands-on therapy.

Two Fully Equipped Locations

We operate from two sites on Balham High Road, each equipped with rehabilitation gyms, strength-testing technology and the equipment required for structured, progressive rehabilitation.

Data-Driven Assessment & Progress Tracking

We use clinical-grade testing to assess strength, mobility and endurance. This removes guesswork and allows us to track your progress accurately over time.

Advanced Treatment Options

When appropriate, we integrate Shockwave Therapy for tendon issues and Compex neuromuscular stimulation to improve muscle activation, endurance and recovery.

Continuous Team Development

Our team trains together every day, ensuring consistent standards, shared expertise and a unified approach to treatment.

Part of a Wider Clinical Network

When your case requires wider input, we collaborate with trusted sports doctors, radiologists and specialists in their field to ensure seamless continuity of care.

The Instant Physio Promise

If your experience does not meet the standard outlined in your plan, you can ask for your money back. We take responsibility for making you have a great experience with us. Obviously, this does not mean we can guarantee results as health care doesn’t work like that. But we take experience that you have with very seriously and dedicate a lot of time to making sure you enjoy working with us.

A Seamless Patient Experience

Clear communication, straightforward booking and on-time appointments. Everything is designed to remove friction from your care.

The Instant Physio 5-Step Method (IP 5-Step Method)

At Instant Physio Balham, we use our tried and tested Instant Physio 5-Step Method (IP 5-Step Method) — a reliable and robust framework developed by our owner, Ed Thompson, to guide every patient through a structured pathway from pain to long-term health.

This method ensures clarity, consistency and meaningful progress at every stage of your recovery.

Step 1. Roadmapping

We start by identifying what your dream outcome is, then build a treatment plan by reverse-engineering the steps required to get you there in the fastest and safest time.
We establish your working diagnosis, identify the root causes and give you a realistic timeframe for achieving your goals. We then explain the next steps clearly so you know how your plan will unfold.

Step 2. Treating the daily pain

Early treatment focuses on helping to reduce pain that is experienced during day to day tasks e.g. sitting, climbing stairs or walking. This may include:

  • Hands-on treatment or acupuncture

  • Soft-tissue and joint techniques

  • Calming exercises

  • Load and activity guidance

  • Electrotherapy

The aim is to settle the irritated area so you can move more freely and progress to targeted rehabilitation.

Step 3. Treating the root cause

Once symptoms are more stable, we address the underlying issues that contributed to the problem. This may involve:

  • Rebuilding strength in key muscle groups

  • Improving power, endurance and balance

  • Increasing mobility where required

  • Gradually loading the area to build resilience

  • Education on training loads

This step creates durable change and helps prevent symptoms from returning.

Step 4. Return-to-play testing

Before returning to your chosen activity, e.g. running, the gym, sport or more demanding daily tasks, we ensure your body is genuinely ready using comprehensive testing.

We check your strength, control and ability to tolerate the movements you need to do and that you feel confident. We need gather enough evidence to prove that you are ready to return in order to reduce the risk of re-injury.

Step 5. Prevent & protect

Once you are back to your normal activities, we focus on keeping you there. This may include:

  • Continuing strength training with our team

  • Periodic check-ins

  • Massage treatment when needed

  • Ongoing mobility and resilience work

  • Guidance on training loads, recovery and long-term training programme

The goal is simple: maintain progress, protect your body and support your long-term health.

Where People Enter the IP 5-Step Method

Not everyone starts at Step 1. Your entry point depends on your symptoms and goals:

  • Some begin at Step 3 if their pain is already manageable we can get to work on addressing the root cause.

  • Some begin at Step 4 when they are close to returning to sport or training but want to do so safely and with confidence.

  • Some begin at Step 5 when they are already well and want maintenance, performance or longevity-focused support.

Wherever you start, the IP 5-Step Method adapts to what you need most.

Yes. Our main clinic is on Balham High Road and serves the entire SW12 community.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly.

Is this safe if I have long-standing pain?

Yes. Our team specialises in managing persistent and complex issues.

How long is the first appointment?

Your initial assessment is typically 60 minutes, including a diagnosis and tailored plan.

Do you treat sports injuries?

Yes — including running injuries, tendon issues, muscle strains and gym-related problems.

Do you offer massage or hands-on treatment?

Yes. Hands-on treatment is included when clinically appropriate, alongside rehab. We also have a highly trained soft tissue therapist, Ellie, who works closely with the physio team and is extremely effective at reducing pain and stiffness.

How close are you to Balham Station?

Around 10–12 minutes’ walk, or a 3-minute bus journey.

Isn’t physio just exercises?

No absolutely not. We often say that the majority of the benefit from seeing a physio is the education. But as a patient obviously your main concern will be the pain and how to reduce it in the fastest time. This is paramount for us too and we gear up absolutely everything in your first few sessions towards reducing pain, often using hands-on treatment.
